Biographical Information:
I use contemporary realism to capture the vibrant beauty of the natural world.  My works are about saturated colors and the play of light.

I'm entirely self-taught, but from a family of women artists going back generations.  My medium is acrylics, though in winter when the light fades, I also draw.  But always, no matter the medium, it's all about the light.

Artist Statement:
My art happens at the intersection of impressionism and realism, where I’m currently investigating the play of Southern California light on our unique landscape.

I’ve returned home to Los Angeles after decades near Washington, D.C.  Truly, the light in both places is very different.  There, because of the high humidity, the water in the air diffuses the light, softens it, fuzzes it around forms to make them vaguer even on a sunny day.  Here, though, the streaming, dry sunlight has a clarity that sharpens form.

The natural shapes, too, are different.  Gone are the furred green hills of the Shenandoah Valley, replaced by hibiscus that blooms nearly year-round and lollipop palm trees, along with vibrant roses all the time.  Buildings and people are the same everywhere, fundamentally, but the natural world changes wherever we go.  That’s why the challenge of rendering a unique locale always fascinates me.  But here in LA, it is both form and that surprising clear light.

My website, nancylasaterart.com, includes work from rainy London (Plane Trees in Hyde Park and Playing Koi), Key West (Afternoon Glow), fall in Cambridge MA (Autumn Bird), Utah (Zion Cactus and Prickly Pears at Zion), spring in Washington, D.C. (Magnolias), morning in Monterey CA (Tidepools in Monterey), Santa Barbara (Lilies of the Nile), and Los Angeles (Beach Party).
