Artist Statement:
My paintings are shaped by the places I call home. Living in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, drew me toward Western subjects, an influence that continued after I moved away. Angus reflects that period, while Ol' Tex grew from my interest in a weathered face, expressive color and light that seemed to tell a story. Afternoon Palms turns toward Los Angeles, my current home, where the palms outside my apartment have become a familiar part of daily life.
Working in oil from photographs and reference images, I build from thin underpaintings to thicker layers, using brushes and palette knives to explore light, texture and character. In these works, the shaggy coat of the cattle, the planes of the cowboy's face and the rough palm fronds offer different possibilities for making a subject feel present through paint.
Painting brings me joy and a sense of calm, and I hope to share that experience with others. I want these works to offer a moment away from everyday pressures: an invitation to spend time with another place, find beauty in its character and enjoy the simple pleasure of looking.
