Louis Hovey Sharp (1874-1946)
LOUIS HOVEY SHARP (1874-1946) Born in Glencoe, IL on July 27, 1874, Louis Sharp was a landscape painter on the grand scale. Around 1910, Sharp studied privately with Chase Duveneck, Charles Boutwood, and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved on to sketch for a brief time at Walpi, on the Hopi reservation in Arizona. In 1914 he settled in Pasadena., CA. For the following 15 years he maintained studios in both California and in Taos , New Mexico. He also spent months at a time at the Grand Canyon painting scenes for the Santa Fe Railroad. Sharp died in Pasadena,CA. in 1946. Louis Hovey Sharp is listed in the Smithsonian Institution Inventory of American Paintings, a member of: California Art Club; California Watercolor Society; Painters & Sculptures of LA., Panama-California Expo (San Diego) 1915 winning the silver and bronze medals.

He sketched for a brief time on the Hopi reservation in Arizona before moving to Pasadena, CA in 1914. For the next 15 years he kept studios both in Pasadena and Taos, NM. In 1917 he spent many months painting in the Grand Canyon; in 1925 he was on the Monterey peninsula, and after 1929 lived for a time in the Austrian Tyrol. Sharp died in Pasadena on June 13, 1946. Biography from AskART: A landscape painter, he did subjects that include desert landscapes, the Grand Canyon, and western genre. He was born in Glencoe, Illinois, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in the East with William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck, and Charles Boutwood. He is listed in the Smithsonian Institution Inventory of American Paintings as having painted the Grand Canyon around 1910. He also painted at Walpi on the Hopi Reservation and in the 1920s, painted Grand Canyon scenes for the Santa Fe Railroad. From 1914, he lived in Pasadena, California, and had a studio there and also in Taos, New Mexico. In the 1930s, he painted in the Austrian Tyrol where he became a resident for a short time. He died in Los Angeles on July 12, 1946.

He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited in Taos and Pasadena in the 1910s-1930s, as well the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, and the Panama-California Expo (San Diego, 1915). Sharp lived in Pasadena in 1914, and also lived in Oak Park, IL.
