| Artist Statement: |
As a Creative Writing Major in the post-Vietnam days, I struggled to find an imaginative voice to express certainties in uncertain times. It is a struggle in which I admit failure as a wordsmith. It wasn’t until I moved to Southern California and began to view the world through the eyes of her local artists that it came to me. The older model did not allow for the expression of the dualities that constitute a lived life e.g. joy/despair, fear/excitement, disappointment/encouragement. It was something in the air. More specifically, it was something in the light. Here in Southern California we have an extraordinarily clear, warm and colorful light in which we live gritty, lonely, despairing and often triumphant lives. Artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Frank Romero, Claes Oldenburg, David Hockney and Robert Irwin opened my eyes to new possibilities.
My paintings are about the journey we all take individually. I use the old metaphor of a road. Though most of us never venture off well paved highways, no one is immune to the unexpected detours, wash-outs or unexpected curves. How we manage these rough spots is how we have become who we are. |
