BIOGRAPHY
Artist Statement:

For me, photography is about time, space, light, surface and personal expression. Not much may be excluded. Time is plastic, allowing for the combination of images made at various times and in different places. I also like the idea of covering a wide swatch of the medium’s history, from pinhole to pixel, from pictorialism to surrealism, in one image. Because photography encompasses every aspect of life, my output has been multifaceted. Sometimes color does the job best, sometimes black and white is the right choice. Therefore, like many artist-photographers, my portfolio really is several portfolios, especially given that working with photographic imagery should be liberating, not restrictive.

Biographic Information:

William T. (Bill) Saul got his start in photography while earning his Master of Journalism Degree at UCLA under the tutelage of men who had worked for Newsweek Magazine, the Louisville Courier Journal and the Los Angeles Times. His interest in the arts began while his father, C.T. Saul, was earning an MFA in painting, then studying at the Art Students League in New York City. The elder Saul soon became a major force on the Native American art scene while also working as a draftsman on the East Coast and in Oklahoma.

As a reporter for a local newspaper, Bill Saul won several awards for spot news photography, and continued to make photography an important aspect of his professional development at Copley News Service, the Associated Press, and the ABC Television Network.

Additionally, Saul took related courses at Otis-Parsons Art Institute, and undertook private studies with Edmund Teske at the artist-photographer’s studio residence in Hollywood. During this time, he also served on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies. His stay there led him to participate in several LACPS group shows, and attend workshops by artist-photographers including Robbert (cq) Flick, Robert Heinecken and Joyce Niemanas.

After leaving ABC, a portfolio review of his photojournalism and more expressive images led to a 10-year teaching career in the Glendale Unified School District.

Most recently, Bill was selected by curator and acclaimed artist Lita Albuquerque to participate in “Brand 36: Works on Paper,” an international exhibit at the Brand Library art galleries, and displayed six works at North Hollywood’s Two Dogs Gallery.

He lives in La Canada, Ca. with his wife, Suzanne, an artist. Their two children are John, of Sausalito, Ca., and Terri, of Berkeley, Ca. Lydia, a granddaughter, also lives in Berkeley.
